Description

Alkmaar is a historic city which accommodates over a thousand munical and national monuments. The city is widely know as "Kaasstad" ("Cheese city"). From the beginning of April till the end of September there is a traditional Cheesemarket on fridays. Alkmaar is further known for his many courtyards, like the "Hof van Sonoy" from the 16th century and the "Wildemanshofje". It is a very nice town to visit, due to the historic canals, cafes, restaurants and stores. Along the canals you will find many nice houses from the 16th till 19th century.

Every year 100.000 people visit the Cheesemarket in Alkmaar. The market is being held on the Waagplein, in front of the monumental Waagbuilding. The cheesecarriers wear clothes in four different colours: yellow, red, blue and green. The markt starts at 10.00 o'clock and ends at 12.30h.
