Doesburg originated as a settlement on a levee of the Oude IJssel, somewhere around the year 1000. Its origins are hidden in the name Doesburg. Does means peaty or swampy area and Burg means mountain or castle. The settlement was strategically located where the Oude IJssel flows into the Gelderse IJssel. The heyday begins in 1447 when the city joins the Hanseatic League. This was a partnership between a large number of cities, of which at its peak 150-200 cities were members, spread over a huge area. Trade was one of the main sources of income At the end of the 15th century, the Hanseatic League slowly lost influence. Until 1923 Doesburg remained a settlement city. Today it is a wonderfully compact city to wander through among all the monuments.
