1 - Domtoren

The iconic Dom Tower is the symbol of Utrecht and with its 112 meters the highest church tower in the Netherlands. The foundation stone of the Dom Tower was laid on 26 June 1321 and after more than 60 years of construction, construction was completed in 1382. In 1674, a devastating tornado swept through Utrecht, separating the church and the tower for good. The tower then became a place where gay men gathered in secret. Only after 200 years, in 1826, the remains of the collapsed nave are removed and the current Domplein is created.

In the middle of the historic Domkwartier is the monumental, gothic Dom Church. The Dom Church is located next to the Dom Tower. They used to be connected, but in 1674 a tornado cut a gap between the tower and the church. The church was built from 1254 as a continuation of the Romanesque cathedral of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Utrecht and was dedicated to Saint Martin. The church has been Protestant since 1580.

3 - Werfkelders

The Utrecht Oudegracht and its yards are unique in the world. When Utrecht receives city rights and a defensive wall in 1122, the construction of a shipping route right through the city is also started: the Oudegracht. Due to the connection with the Vecht (north) and the Vaartsche Rijn (south), the Oudegracht started to function as an elongated harbour. During the digging, the released soil was thrown onto the banks, making the street a lot higher than the canal. The lower mooring quays were connected directly to the storage cellars of the canal houses by means of tunnels under the street. Merchandise could easily be dragged to the houses in this way.

Between the buildings of the conservatory is the courtyard of the former Mariakerk. The 11th century Mariakerk was one of the five Utrecht collegiate churches, and was one of the most impressive Romanesque buildings in the Netherlands. However, during the siege of Vredenburg Castle in 1576, the decline begins, and due to the abolition of the chapter in 1811, the church is finally demolished in stages. Today only the cloister remains standing. Together with the surrounding buildings of the 11th century cloister, the courtyard or open space is referred to as Pandhof Sinte Marie. In the beautiful garden is a beautiful flower, herb and butterfly garden.
